The evolution of online prescription Internet sites has brought several advantages to consumers, allowing individuals to attain ever-increasing amounts of knowledge to improve their understanding of health issues and treatment options. Last year alone more than 22 million Americans used the Internet to find medical information. According to Investor's Business Daily, 43% of web surfers access health care data online each year. Health concerns are the sixth most common reason people use the Internet, and according to the market research firm, Cyber Dialogue Inc., this number is growing 70 percent a year. The leading attractions to purchasing consumer products online are speed, privacy, ease of choosing and ordering products, and reduction in possible prescription errors with the use of computer technology to transmit prescriptions from doctors to pharmacies. Other benefits include: lower prices through increased competition among licensed sellers; greater availability of drugs for people with difficulties causing inability to get to the pharmacy or people who may live a great distance from the pharmacy; the ease of comparative shopping among many sites to find the best prices and products; and greater convenience and variety of products for all customers who prefer online ordering of drugs. While there seems to be vast amounts of benefits with these online drug prescription sites for consumers, the public must remember that they are at risk from avaricious sites or individuals that run them, which do not have the best interests of the consumer in mind. Over approximately 200 domestic sites have been identified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and the American Medical Association identified over 400 sites that both dispense and offer a prescribing service, half of which are located in foreign countries. This sizeable variety of companies, which are expanding everyday, give rise to numerous concerns for the consumer and challenges for government at both state and federal levels. Such concerns include illegal sale of drugs not approved by the FDA, distribution of counterfeit drugs, prescription drugs dispensed without a valid prescription, fatal interactions between drugs that may occur because of sites only requiring one to fill out a questionnaire to obtain the prescribed drug without prior knowledge of medical history, and products marketed with fraudulent health claims. The unique qualities of the Internet, including its broad reach, relative anonymity, and ease of creating new websites or removing old ones, pose new challenges for the enforcement of existing laws. The technological advancements of electronic commerce have outdated the establishment of the FDA and its system of drug regulation as it exists today. Describe a situation of public interest in which critical and/or creative thought could have been used for a better outcome. Describe why it is important to think critically and creatively in similar situations. Recent racial unrest has been a hot topic in the public interest arena. With the death of a young man as a result of an encounter with law enforcement is difficult enough to deal with. Add to that dynamic that the young man was black and the officer was white, and the dynamic instantly intensifies. That moment becomes and instant opportunity where critical and/or creative thought should be considered instead of a knee jerk reaction since there was nothing in place prior. My addressing this does not have anything to do with the result of the riots, but everything to do with the reactions from both sides of the dilemma. Both sides needed to consider what actually happened, how the entire event took place and ended, as well as what the next step should be in anticipation of every scenario possible. There are enough brilliant minds in law enforcement as well as in the community that feel defied, to bridge whatever differences that may have been occurring prior to the event. If the community and the department that is in place to serve and protect them would pause long enough for what is in the best interest of all, they likely would have opted on an approach similar to a Community Policing approach where both sides were involved with changing the minds, actions, and directions of the entire community. Define free will, truth, knowledge, and opinion. Explain how we use them to form thoughts. What role does each play in critically assessing situations? Free will, by definition, is having the ability or power to act without regard to limitations and at the individuals own discretion. Now, to define the word truth, it would be that it is anything that is trueà in accordance with fact or reality and is also a fact or belief that is accepted as true. Next is knowledge which is defined as facts, information, or skills learned by a person or group of people. This can be done through experiences or an education. Simply, it is having the awareness or familiarity that is gained by experience of a fact or situation. Lastly, is the word opinion. This relates to a view or judgment formed by an individual or a group about something or anything and it is not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Often it is an estimation of the quality of worth of someone or something that is the beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing. It essentially is an estimation of the quality or worth of someone or something. Each of these has a role and each plays in critically assessing situations. For instance, ââ¬Ëfree willââ¬â¢ allows for a decision to be made based solely on how an individual feels about what is being addressed. They can form their own belief or judgment and choose how they feel about it, how it affects them, without the concern on how it will make others feel about them. Now relating to ââ¬Ëtruthââ¬â¢, all of the information that is known and to be true is presented and a determination of how one feels about it or allows it to affect them is their choice. ââ¬ËKnowledgeââ¬â¢ allows a person to form an immediate attitude or estimation about any topic because personal experiences or obtained information creates an influence or reaction immediately. The word ââ¬Ëopinionââ¬â¢ has almost as much of an opportunity to make an immediate impression. This is mostly based on knowledge that may have been obtained but not personally experienced. Identify three hindrances to the critical thinking process. Determine methods for overcoming these hindrances. Identify a time in which you experienced a hindrance in critical thinking. Describe a method you could use to overcome the hindrances. To defineà ââ¬Ëhindrancesââ¬â¢ before identifying how it effects the critical thinking process, I would say it is a resistance to change, conformity, and/or self-deception. I will address how to overcome these in the order that they listed. First, to overcome resistance to change, a person must be open-minded and welcoming to things that are new. This does not mean that they must be immediately accepted, just considered. Secondly, to overcome conformity, it simply needs for a person to think for themselves and not be concerned about what other people believe or even if they share your view. Lastly, to overcome self-deception, we must be honest with ourselves, our inner selves. Once we obtain as much information about a person, subject, or topic, we base our findings on what we now know or feel about it. A time when I was personally faced with any of the hindrances listed, was when I assumed the new position with this startup company. It is very different from any other position that I have held. Although I do not have a vast knowledge of everything that goes on in the company, I bring an incredible amount of experiences. Here, I have experienced many coworkers at my level of management that insist that they know what is in the best interest of the company on any given situation. Although they ask for opinions, they often go with their own. Everyone is just supposed to be on board and there are some that act like lemmings and simply follow along. To not ââ¬Ëmake wavesââ¬â¢, I often allowed this to continue, although I felt strongly that the input I had was not only valid, but equally important. To combat the resistance to change, I openly considered what the final decision was going to be and honestly weighed it against my input. I then decided that conforming was not necessarily in the best interest of the company, so I composed an approach to share what I had to offer and compared it to what was being considered. During establishing how I was going to present it, I was able to share this with vigor and assurance because I was honest with myself when weighing both mine and their options. Identify a message in advertising. Describe how you perceive the message of the advertisement. Try to determine the reality of the advertisement. Distinguish between your perception and the reality of the message. I am a Harley Davidson fan, I own one and I ride it often despite the weather conditions. Very often, other motorcycle companies will do what they can to mimic the style and grace of the Harley Davidson. This is to convince potential buyers that they are just as goodà if not better, and less expensive. Although some parts of their advertisement may be true, there are many parts of it that are not. What they often end up doing is over emphasizing quality as well as quantity. It is not that it cannot be obtained, it is just that it can only be obtained for a nominal fee. Again, it is the fine print that most people overlook that actually reveals the truth. I have been deluded myself because of how convincing they campaign is, that I have pondered at least looking at their offer. With the advent of ââ¬Ëpausingââ¬â¢ your television, I do so at the end of the commercial and read the fine print. More times than not, it reveals the condition that the motorcycle comes in and it is never what you see being driven around by the actor(s). Critical and creative thinking occurs in everyoneââ¬â¢s life whether they realize it or not. It would be in the best interest of everyone if they realized the importance of learning to be a more critical and creative thinker. This way, they can feel better about the outcome or realize that the decision was theirs and not someone elseââ¬â¢s. It is easier to learn from your own mistakes.

However, there are times when there is nothing that they can do about it. The students often start to hate each other because of the teachers' actions. The students are constantly trying to find a way to get rid of their substitute teachers. The climax of the story is when the students meet Ms. Nogard. She causes the students to literally hate each other. Ms. Nogard used her ability to read people's minds to make the students hate each other. Ms. Nogard's third ear (on the top of her head) allows her to do this. The students are not able to stop Ms. Nogard, but Ms. Jewls does when she comes back with her baby. Then Louis (the yard teacher) realized he loved Ms. Nogard, even with her third ear. Then, Ms. Nogard was touched and she became really nice. The students changed back to normal when Ms. Jewls came back with her baby. The students didn't realize that hey were going to have a hard time with the substitutes, but they changed and learned to respect people for who they are. Instead, youââ¬â¢ll need to find a common denominator before you add or subtract. There are many ways to find a common denominator, some of which are easier or more efficient than others. One of the easiest ways to find a common denominator, though not necessarily the best, is to simply multiply the two denominators together. For example, a possible least common denominator for $1/2$ and $1/12$ would be 24, which you find by multiplying the 2 denominator by the 12 denominator. You can solve a problem using the common denominator of 24 using the steps below, but if you do, youââ¬â¢ll run into a problem- your fraction will need to be reduced. To eliminate the need to reduce once youââ¬â¢ve added or subtracted, instead try to find the least common denominator. Sometimes that will be the same as multiplying two denominators together, but it often wonââ¬â¢t be. However, finding the least common denominator isnââ¬â¢t hard- youââ¬â¢ll just need to be familiar with your multiplication tables. For example, letââ¬â¢s try to find the least common denominator, rather than just a common denominator, for the same fractions we used above: $$1/2\: \and \: 1/12$$. To do this, list out a few multiples of each denominator Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 Then, look at both lists of multiples and find the lowest number both share. In this case, both 2 and 12 share the multiple 12. If we kept going, we would end up with other multiples they share, such as 24, but 12 is the smallest, meaning itââ¬â¢s the least common multiple. You can do this with any pair of numbers, though larger numbers may present more of a challenge. For adding or subtracting, you can always return to simply multiplying one denominator by the other if youââ¬â¢re having trouble finding the least common denominator, but do keep in mind that you will likely have to reduce. Fractions are the tastiest part of math. How to Add Fractions - Method 1 Now that you know how to find a common denominator, youââ¬â¢re ready to start adding and subtracting. Letââ¬â¢s return to the example of $1/2$ and $1/12$- in this case, let's look at this problem: $$1/2 + 1/12$$ Remember, you canââ¬â¢t add straight across; $1/2 + 1/12$ does not equal $2/14$. #1: Find a Common Denominator Weââ¬â¢ll find the least common denominator first, since thatââ¬â¢s generally the best way to go about it. We already did the work above, but as a reminder, youââ¬â¢ll want to write out a series of multiples of each number until you find a match. In this case, both 2 and 12 have a multiple of 12. #2: Multiply to Get Each Numerator Over the Same Denominator Always remember that anything you do to the denominator must also be done to the numerator. So letââ¬â¢s take a look at these two fractions we need to get over the denominator 12. $1/12$ is easy- itââ¬â¢s already over the denominator of 12, so we donââ¬â¢t have to do anything to it. $1/2$ will need some work. What number multiplied by 2 will equal 12? To rephrase that question as a problem we can solve, $2*?=12$. Or, even simpler, we can invert the operation to get $12/2=?$, which we can easily solve. So now we know that to go from a denominator of 2 to a denominator of 12, we need to multiply by 6. Again, remember that everything you do to the denominator needs to be done to the numerator as well, so multiply the top and bottom by 6 to get $6/12$. #3: Add the Numerators, but Leave the Denominators Alone Now that you have the same denominators, you can add the numerators straight across. In this case, that will mean that $6/12 + 1/12 = 7/12$. Ask yourself if you can reduce the fraction by diving both the numerator and the denominator by the same number. In this case, you canââ¬â¢t, so your answer is a simple $7/12$. How to Add Fractions- Method 2 Alternatively, we could simply multiply the two denominators together to find a different common denominator. This is a different way to solve the problem, but will end up with the same answer. #1: Multiply the Denominators Together No fancy tricks here- simply multiply 2 by 12 to get 24. That will be your common denominator. #2: Multiply to Get Each Numerator Over the Same Denominator Just as we did when we found the least common denominator, weââ¬â¢ll need to multiply both the top and bottom number of each fraction. In this case, use inverse operations to find out what number youââ¬â¢ll need to multiply. If $1/2$ needs to be $?/24$, you can do $24à ·2$ to figure out what number youââ¬â¢ll need to multiply by- 12. Multiply the top and the bottom by 12 to get $12/24$. Repeat the process with $1/12$. If $1/12$ needs to be $?/24$, solve $24à ·12$ to get 2. Now multiply the numerator and denominator of $1/12$ by 2 to get $2/24$. #3: Add the Numerators Together Now you can simply add straight across. $$12/24 + 2/24 = 14/24$$. #4: Reduce Hereââ¬â¢s where the extra step comes in. $14/24$ is not a fraction in its lowest form, so weââ¬â¢ll need to reduce it. To reduce, we need to divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same number. To do so, weââ¬â¢ll need to find the greatest common factor. Much like finding the least common multiple, this means listing out numbers until we find two factors that both the numerator and the denominator have in common, excluding 1, like so: 14: 2, 7 24: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 What number do they have in common? 2. That means that 2 is our greatest common factor, and therefore the number weââ¬â¢ll be dividing the numerator and denominator by. $14à ·2=7$ and $24à ·2=12$ giving us the answer of $7/12$. The answer is the same as when we solved using the least common multiple, and canââ¬â¢t be reduced any further, so thatââ¬â¢s our final answer! If you ever find yourself writing out lots of factors without much luck, there are some quick ways to figure out potential factors. If a number is even, it can be divided by 2. If you can add a number's digits a number that is divisible by 3, the number is divisible by 3- such as 96 ($9+6=15$ and $1+5=6$, which is divisible by 3). If the number ends in a 5 or a 0, it is divisible by 5. If youââ¬â¢re not sure when to stop looking for factors, subtract the smaller number from the larger one. That number will be the largest possible common factor, but not the greatest common factor itself.For example, letââ¬â¢s take 50 and 32. Sure, we could just divide both by 2 and keep reducing from there, but if you do $50-32$ you get 18, telling us to stop looking for the greatest common factor once we hit 18.In practice, that looks like this:50: 2, 5, 1032: 2, 4, 8, 16Instead of continuing on, we know to stop when the next factor would be 18 or above, stopping us from spending more time figuring out factors we donââ¬â¢t need. We can see a lot quicker that the greatest common factor is 2 and move on with the problem! $1/1 - 1/? = yum$ How to Subtract Fractions Once youââ¬â¢ve mastered adding fractions, subtracting fractions will be a breeze! The process is exactly the same, though youââ¬â¢ll naturally be subtracting instead of adding. #1: Find a Common Denominator Letââ¬â¢s look at the following example: $$2/3-3/10$$ We need to find the least common multiple for the denominators, which will look like this: 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 10: 10, 20, 30 The first number they have in common is 30, so weââ¬â¢ll be putting both numerators over a denominator of 30. #2: Multiply to Get Both Numerators Over the Same Denominator First, we need to figure out how much weââ¬â¢ll need to multiply both the numerator and denominator of each fraction by to get a denominator of 30. For $2/3$, what number times 3 equals 30? In equation form: $$30à ·3=?$$ Our answer is 10, so weââ¬â¢ll multiply both the numerator and denominator by 10 to get $20/30$. Next, weââ¬â¢ll repeat the process for the second fraction. What number do we need to multiply by 10 to get 30? Well, $30à ·10=3$, so weââ¬â¢ll multiply the top and bottom by 3 to get $9/30$. This makes our problem $20/30-9/30$, which means weââ¬â¢re ready to continue! #3: Subtract the Numerators Just as we did with addition, weââ¬â¢ll subtract one numerator from the other but leave the denominators alone. $$20/30-9/30=/30$$. Since we found the least common multiple, we already know that the problem canââ¬â¢t be reduced any further. However, letââ¬â¢s say that we just multiplied 3 by 10 to get the denominator of 30, so we need to check if we can reduce. Letââ¬â¢s use that little trick we learned to find the greatest possible common factor. Then, following their charismatic leader Imam Musa Sadr, who mysteriously disappeared in Libya in 1978, the group developed until the Israeli invasion of 1982. This brought about Shiite radicalism, which is the Hizbullah's basis when it was created. Since then, the Hizbullah have been an influential part of Lebanon. The Hizbullah is a group of tactical genius. They have created an image as being of good intentions. They have helped to rebuild many communities in return for the people's backing. The agenda of the Hizbullah, which is known for its attacks on Israeli forces in occupied southern Lebanon, is now unclear. Israel withdrew from the "security zone" of southern Lebanon in May 2000. The only area of Lebanon where Israeli forces remained was Sheba'a farms. Many believed that because of the Hizbullah victory and the Israeli pullout, the Hizbullah would now focus on political and social agendas inside Lebanon. However Hizbullah has chosen to persist in its military strategy against Israel. Hizbullah's actions have the potential to trigger a full-scale, inter-state war. Some militant actions after the withdrawal have been: - the kidnapping of three Israeli soldiers from Mount Dov / Sheba'a farms. Hizbullah claimed that this advanced Lebanese interests: 'the liberation of disputed Sheba'a farms and the freeing of Lebanese detainees in Israel' and the Palestinian struggle. -the killing of an IDF solider in the Sheba'a area on November 26. Despite press reports of a possible Israel-Hizbullah swap of prisoners, Hizbullah continues to lay the groundwork for future military actions. For Israel, heavy retaliation against Hizbullah and its ally Syria, especially at a time of Israeli-Palestinian violence, risks opening Israel's northern settlements to Hizbullah fire and maybe even a full-scale military confrontation along the northern border. Aims for Hizbullah today: 1. Survival - leader, Nasrallah has said that Hizbullah is defined by its "Jihadic identity," a philosophy of continual military struggle. When Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon, recognized by the UN Secretary General as fulfilling the requirements of UNSC resolution 425, Nasrallah declared this inadequate. Domestic violence in the United States is said to be high whereby, it is reported that over 700,000 Americans are victimized by the domestic violence according to the 2000 National Crime Victimization Survey. (Nocav and Bourbonnais, 2002) Domestic violence in the United States is said to come up as a result a result of poverty, gender inequality and even socio-economic factors. In this case we find that, the physical violence is defined as an intentional use of an individuals physical force with an objective of causing injury, harm or death these injuries are usually caused by either using a weapon, hitting or even kicking another person, while sexual violence is known as the physical force used to involve an individual into sexual acts against his will. Psychological violence or commonly known as the emotional violence that include the humiliation of an individual, controlling what an individual can do, it may also be practiced by withholding the victims information this act is usually applied to make the victim embarrassed, isolated and denied the right to enjoy his personal rights. The other type of abuse is the economic violence where we find that an abuser takes a complete control over the victimsââ¬â¢ economic materials and resources. (Lupton, 2002) These differences are both biologically and socially determined where the social, cultural, economic and political forces are said to have brought variation in the position of different group of people in different societies globally. According to various research studies conducted we find that these domestic violence are especially caused by; the psychological factors which involve that personality and the characteristics of the stated offender and this may also carry a form of social hypothesis that normally consider the factors that are created externally in the offenderââ¬â¢s surroundings, this may include the family structure, stress or even social classifications. (Draper, 1989) In some communities we find that violence comes up as a result of an individual seeking power or control over other members of the society, here we find that the abuser creates a negative impact on the victims, whereby they end up attributed to low self- esteem. An example for this practice in the United States is where women are said to be disadvantaged where they are being isolated in the distribution of income and consumption within the community. Where the share of the national income shows that there is inequality between women and men throughout the world, here women are said to have a significantly lower share of national income than men. Therefore we find that men regard themselves to be given a higher priority they practice gender discrimination where more women and children are forced by men in their families to do most work to produce food for the families in which men are proved to be taking control over family resources and yet they do not participate in their production. Through gender analysis of roles done by many institutions it is said that men contribute less than three hours in a day of their time to activities that is geared towards food production compared to women who do the bulk of the work here we find that the rights of women are being violated. Conclusion The main roles of the civil rights movement is to fight the domestic violence in the American society, under this we find that, the civil rights activists say that there are many ways of handling the domestic violence in our communities whereby the government plays a role of ensuring that commitments to equal rights and opportunities are upheld and delivered, by setting an enabling environment for all members of the American society at the country level and in the global community through the formulation and implementation of conferences and international conformities. Promote an active culture that emphasizes the right to formation and support the developmental activists to demand information from all sectors including government, other Non-Governmental organisations in order to promote local accountability to the victimized members of the community. The government should create an enabling environment which will influence change in policies, laws and institutions at national and international levels. (Draper, 1989) The other method that can be applied in dealing with domestic violence is the safety plan which is usually a plan that directed to the victim where he asked to act quickly so that he may remove himself from the dangers of the violence. This plan involve a specific plan of how to get out of the place, here the victim is advised to carry himself with the basic needs that will be required to be used when out of the place. Although partnerships are strengthening around a based purpose there is still so much for the governments affected by the fight over power to close the gaps in understanding and increase co-operation between the governments, the states and the civil societies. This recommendation is seen to be adversarial instead of being collaborative leading to little sharing of experience and good practice by the prominent people in the American society. Tar Baby Toni Morrisonââ¬â¢s novel might for some be a novel of cultural awakening. One also might at their first reading and perhaps also by reading the different studies made on Tar Baby, restricted to an interpretation that sees Jadine, Morrisonââ¬â¢s protagonist, as woman who has, consciously or unconsciously, lost her ââ¬Å"ancient propertiesâ⬠(305) and internalized the values of a white culture. Jadine has totally disconnected herself from her racial identity and cultural heritage. This reading is supported by the fact that Jadine has got her education in Europe with the financial assistance of Valerian Street (her auntââ¬â¢s and uncleââ¬â¢s employer). Paraphrasing Marylyn sanders Mobley ââ¬â the characterization of the protagonist, Jadine, draws attention to a fundamental problem as one that Morrison wants to affirm the self-reliance and freedom of a black woman who makes choices for her own life on her own terms. She also seeks to point out the dangers that can happen to the totally self-reliant if there is no historical connection. While the conflict in Tar Baby is undoubtedly ââ¬Å"between assimilation and cultural nationalism represented by the sealskin coat Ryk has given her and the pie tableâ⬠(Rayson, 94), the limiting categories which Jadine is continually forced into do not come from the white characters but primarily from the black community in which she finds herself because she (Jadine) has embraced white stereotypes along with white culture. While Valerian is portrayed as the traditional master-figure in the novel, it is actually Son, Sydney and Ondine, and the folk past represented by the different women in different places that try to conquer and dominate Jadine, who retain and represent their culture in the very colour of their skin. On the other hand, one could argue that it is as a result of Jadineââ¬â¢s university education in Europe and her career that further draws her away from her culture and identity and therefore (paraphrasing Mobley in Toni Morrison critical perspectives past and present) contributes significantly to the emotional and spiritual uncertainty that plague her as well as the many different roles that are imposed upon her by her aunt and uncle as well as the ââ¬Ësocietyââ¬â¢ that caused her to seek upward social mobility. Sydney and Ondine, Jadineââ¬â¢s uncle and aunt in the novel can be seen as representative of one of the tar pits for Jadine. They do not accept all black people equal in the community in which they live because they employ racial hierarchies. Ondine sees herself as the only woman in the house (209), while Sydney notes more than twice that he is a Philadelphia Negro, ââ¬Å"the proudest people in the raceâ⬠(61). They seem to have a clear vision of what they want for Jadine their niece. As the story progresses, though, it becomes clearer that it is not actually a question of what they want for Jadine but what they want of her or expect her to do. In addition to them wanting Jadine to provide them safety and credit for their race, Ondine admits by the end of the novel, ââ¬Å"maybe I just wanted her to feel sorry for us [â⬠¦ ] and thatââ¬â¢s a lowdown wish if I ever had oneâ⬠(282). Jadine understands that Sydney and Ondine ââ¬Å"had gotten Valerian to pay her tuition while they sent her the restâ⬠(49) and Ondine keeps reminding that she ââ¬Å"would have stood on her feet all day all night to put Jadine through that schoolâ⬠(193). Ondine sees Jadine as her ââ¬Å"crownâ⬠(282), and she and Sydney are continually ââ¬Å"boastingâ⬠(49) about Jadineââ¬â¢s success to the point that Margaret calls Ondine ââ¬Å"Mother Superiorâ⬠(84). In return, they seem to want Jadine to offer them safety for the rest of their lives as Ondine claims that ââ¬Å"Nothing can happen to us as long as sheââ¬â¢s hereâ⬠(102). They are not comfortable with the idea of Jadine marrying Ryk, who is ââ¬Å"white but European which was not as bad as white and Americanâ⬠(48), but they are terrified of her running off with a ââ¬Å"no-count Negroâ⬠(193) like Son. Although their views on racial hierarchies seem to alter from time to time, on the outside they seem to want what is best for Jadine. Jadine refute Ondineââ¬â¢s views of black womanhood when she tells her some of the things that are expected of her from society Jadine tells Ondine that: ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t want to learn how to be the kind of woman youââ¬â¢re talking about because I donââ¬â¢t want to be that kind of womanâ⬠(282). This, according to Rayson (1998), might be interpreted as Jadineââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"rejecting the roles of mother, daughter, and woman to stay the tar babyâ⬠(Rayson, 95), however it marks her becoming aware of what kind of woman she is by the end of the novel. Jadineââ¬Ës inclination toward upward social mobility leads to her separation from the Afro-American roots and the tar quality that Morrison advocates. This kind of flaw in Jadine effectively disqualifies her as a black woman capable of nurturing a family and by large the community. Jadineââ¬Ës perception of an ancestral relationship from which she is estranged occurs when she sees an African woman in a Parisian bakery. When she is celebrating her success as model evidenced in her appearance on the cover of Elle, Jadine becomes nervous or perhaps uncomfortable by the African woman in yellow attire. She triggers an identity crisis in Jadine at the moment when she should have felt more secure with her professional achievement assured by beauty and education. In his African woman, Jadine catches a glimpse of beauty, a womanliness, an innate elegance, a nurturer, an authenticity that she had never known before: ? That womanââ¬Ës woman ââ¬â that mother/sister/she/; that unphotographable beauty? (p. 43). By calling the African woman ? that mother/sister/she,? J. Deswal (online source ââ¬Å"Tar Baby- Shodhganga) claims that ââ¬Å"Morrison presents a threefold definition of womanhood which can thrive within the confines of family and community only. The three eggs she balances effortlessly in her ? tar-black fingers? (p. 44) appear to Jadine as if the woman were boasting of her own easy acceptance of womanhoodâ⬠. Wendy Harding and Jacky Martin in A World of Difference: An Inter-cultural Study of Toni Morrison explain the importance of the African womanââ¬Ës presence as such: ââ¬Å"Whereas Jadine has just been rewarded for her conformity to Western ideals of feminity, the African woman suggests a more powerful version of black womanhood. Like some fertility goddess, she holds in her hand the secret of life. She is the mother of the world in whose black hands whiteness appears as something as easily crushed as cared for (71). When Jadine measures herself by the idea of black womanhood that she sees in the African woman the insecurities of her rootless condition surface in her mind. The women in yellow makes Jadine confront her female role and her sexualityâ⬠. Jadine sees ? something in her eyes so powerful? (p. 42) that she follows the woman out of the store. The writers also claim that ââ¬Å"As a symbol of repudiation of Jadineââ¬Ës westernized lifestyle, the African woman ? looks right at Jadine? (p. 43) and spits on the pavementâ⬠. Jadine hates the woman for her spitting, but what she cannot do is escape feeling ? lonely in a way; lonely and inauthentic? as she tells the readers on page 45. When the sense of self is based on the denial of oneââ¬Ës ethnic roots, one is certain to experience mental chaos and alienation. So, the womanââ¬Ës insult to Jadine had the powerful effect of challenging Jadineââ¬Ës choices: her white boyfriend, her girlfriends in New York, her parties, her picture on the cover of Elle and the way she lived her life. One can say that it is as a result of the African woman that Jadine desided to visit her aunt and uncle on the island. Jadine is confused and even questions her plans to marry Ryk, her white boyfriend: I wonder if the person he wants to marry is me or a black girl? And if it isnââ¬Ët me he wants, but any black girl who looks like me, talks and acts like me, what will happen when he finds out that I hate ear hoops, that I donââ¬Ët have to straighten my hair, that Mingus puts me to sleep, that sometimes I want to get out of my skin and be only the person inside ââ¬â not American ââ¬â not black ââ¬â just me? (p. 45) It is through Son, however, that Morrison offers Jadine the ultimate opportunity to ââ¬Ëredeemââ¬â¢ herself to her heritage, adapt it and revive her womanhood. Son picks up from where the African woman left off in a sense by making Jadine confront her inauthenticity. Jadine and Son enjoys their stay in New York because it is the place where Jadine feels at ease. She feels loved and safe: ? He ââ¬Ëunorphanedââ¬â¢ her completely and gave her a brand-new childhood? (p. 231). In turn, Son is encouraged by her need and by his apparent ability to redefine Jadine culturally and emotionally. Son insists that he and Jadine goes to Eloe his hometown where Jadine will see how Son is rooted in family and cultural heritage. He attempts to rescue Jadine from her ignorance and disdain for her cultural heritage, trying in a sense to mould Jadine into the image of his black female ancestors. Son assumes that a relationship with Jadine will mean that they will have children together. He presses claims for family and community: ? He smiled at the vigour of his own heartbeat at the thought of her having his baby? (p. 220). Thus, he wants Jadine to love the nurturing aspects of home and fraternity. He is fed on dreams of his community women. The dreams of ? yellow houses with white doors? and ? fat black ladies in white dresses minding the pie table? (p. 119) are nourishment to Son. Sandra Pouchet Paquet (The ancestors as foundation in their eyes were watching god and tar baby) observes: ? In Sonââ¬Ës dreams of Eloe, the African-American male ego is restored in a community of black man at the center of a black community. But however appreciative Son is of the beauty, the strength, and the toughness of black women; his vision is of male dominance; of the black women as handmaiden? (511). The image feminity that Son cherishes ââ¬â of the black woman taking passive role as a nurturer of the hearth ââ¬â is flagrantly opposite to Jadineââ¬Ës perception of the modern black woman. This terrifies Jadine and narrows the possibility of their forming a family. The modern, educated black woman seems to snivel at the aspects of traditional female- specific role as the nurturer of hearth and home. Decadent white values and life style thwart the black womanââ¬â¢s vital roles of building families and raising children. The modern black woman cannot be a complete human being, for she allows her education to keep her career separate from her nurturing role. The black woman is increasingly becoming able to define her own status and to be economically independent. She tries to seek equality in her relationship with men. Robert Staples gives an insight into the faltering dynamics of modern couples: ? What was once a viable institution because women were a subservient group has lost its value for some people in these days of womenââ¬Ës liberation. The stability of marriage was contingent on the woman accepting her place in the home and not creating dissension by challenging the maleââ¬Ës prerogatives? (125). The black womanââ¬Ës intrinsic quality of ? accepting her place in the home? is Morrisonââ¬Ës tar quality. However, in advocating the tar quality Morrison does not admonish the educational and professional accomplishments of the black woman. In fact, the black woman is expected to achieve a balance between her roles in the domestic and professional fields. ââ¬Å"It is the historical ability of black women to keep their families and careers together. In an era where both the black male and female seek to fulfill individual desires, relationships falter and, consequently, the prospects of the propagation of a family are not too bright. Jadineââ¬Ës tar quality is submerged by the white-like urge for freedom and self-actualization. As a result, she finds the conventions of black womanhood antithetical to her own value systemâ⬠. At Eloe, Jadine is determined to resist rigid male-female role categorization. Jadine cannot ? understand (or accept) her being shunted off with Ellen and the children while the men grouped on the porch and after a greeting, ignored her? (p. 248). While at Eloe, Jadine is provided with yet another chance to attain certain qualities that is for black women. She is accustomed to living an upper-class white lifestyle so she finds the people of Eloe limited and backward. Their stifling little shacks are more foreign to her than the hotel-like splendor of Valerianââ¬Ës mansion. She stays in Aunt Rosaââ¬Ës house where she feels claustrophobically enclosed in a dark, windowless room. She feels ? she might as well have been in a cave, a grave, the dark womb of the earth, suffocating with the sound of plant life moving, but deprived of its sight? (p. 254). It is in this very room where Jadine and Son were having sex that she had a second awakening vision, which is more frightening than the one she had in Paris about the African Woman. Here, Older, black, fruitful and nurturing women ââ¬â her own dead mother, her Aunt Ondine, Sonââ¬Ës dead wife, the African woman in yellow and other black women of her past ââ¬â become a threatening part of Jadineââ¬Ës dreams: I have breasts too,ââ¬Ë she said or thought or willed, I have breasts too. ââ¬Ë But they didnââ¬Ët believe her. They just held their own higher and pushed their own farther out and looked at her,? (p. 261) and ? the night women were not merely against herâ⬠¦ not merely looking superior over their sagging breasts and folded stomachs, they seemed somehow in agreement with each other about her, and were all determined to punish her for having neglected her cultural heritage. They wanted to bind the person she had become and choke it with their breasts. The night women? accuse Jadine for trading the ? ancient properties? (p. 308) of being a daughter, mother, and a woman for her upward mobility and self-enhancement. All these women are punishing Jadine for her refusal to define herself in relation to family, historical tradition and culture. As they ââ¬Ëbrandishââ¬â¢ their breasts before her eyes, they mock and insult her with their feminity. Jadine finds these women backward and sees no self-fulfilling value in the roles that they serve. However, she is constantly haunted by dreams of the black female image that she seems to have lost throughout life. Ondine express shame and disappointment over her lack of concern for her family, the African woman, at the Parisian bakery, spits at her in disgust and the night women, in the vision at Eloe taunt her with their nurturing breasts. Having refuted her own black culture and heritage, Jadine face the consequence of a divided consciousness and a mental death. Her decision to end the love affair with Sonââ¬â ? I canââ¬Ët let you hurt me again? (p. 274) is an evidence of her shunning womanhood and losing her Afro- American roots as she chooses Ryk her white boyfriend over Son who refused to become the person or image that Jadine wants him to be . Jadine is compelled to make her choice and she decides that it is in Paris, away from Son, where there are prospects of financial success and personal independence. She doesnââ¬Ët want what Son and Eloe have to offer: To settle for wifely competence when she could be a beauty queen or to settle for fertility rather than originality and nurturing instead of building? (p. 271). Jadine makes it clear to the reader that she is self-sufficient and independent of men, family and community.
